How to Choose a Dialysis Center
home / choosing a dialysis center
Choose Quality Over Convenience
The convenience of location and transportation while often important considerations, should take a “back seat” when deciding where a patient should be dialyzed.
The patient or the patient’s family should consider fore-most, 2 important statistics before making a final decision: the dialysis center’s rates of mortality and its rates of transplantation. The sooner a patient receives a kidney transplant, the sooner he or she will be off dialysis and can have a better quality of life. And, the chances of survival while one is on dialysis is obviously a key statistic of paramount importance.
Although we are centered in Manhattan we continue to attract patients from Brooklyn & Queens and the other boroughs because of our excellent outcomes.
Always Check Statistics
When evaluating dialysis centers, one should see proven track records of quality dialysis by reviewing actual statistics for each center.
One can readily see that the quality of dialysis at a facility can make a great difference. It can translate into life or death outcomes. It can translate into freedom from dialysis vs. long term dialysis.
Our encouraging statistics also reveal that regarding patients who are not eligible for transplantation or who choose not to be transplanted, we as doctors, can happily report that at Chinatown Dialysis Center our longest patient was on dialysis for 33 years! And, we currently have patients who are still doing well on dialysis with us now for between 20 and 30 years. The key we believe is quality of dialysis and excellent medical monitoring.
Our Excellent Statistics Regarding Transplantation
At Chinatown Dialysis Center, we are proud of our proven record with regard to patient care. We, as doctors, know that kidney transplantation is the best option for patients with end stage renal disease who are medically eligible for transplantation. In fact, we encourage all our patients who are eligible, to seek a family member or friend who might be able to donate a kidney so that the patient can quickly be freed from the need for dialysis. We can proudly report that in the 2 year period 2021 - 2022, virtually three-quarters of our patients who received a cadaver (deceased) kidney transplant, had an average waiting time of less than 2 years (range 5 months to 35 months). This is far superior to many other centers. Note that nationally, only 25% of patients receive a deceased donor kidney transplant within 5 years. Transplanted patients are fortunately no longer in need of dialysis and are usually able to return to their previous lifestyles and level of employment. Federal Government statistics for the years 2018-2020 reveal that Chinatown Dialysis Center’s Standardized Transplantation Ratio (STR) was 179% higher than expected for our facility per Federal calculations, and 201% higher than the average standardized transplantation ratio for all New York State Dialysis Centers. Perhaps even more important, as per federal reports, Chinatown Dialysis Center was more likely to place their patients on a transplant waiting list in the years 2018-2020 at a rate which is 239% higher than expected! Remember, that if a dialysis center fails to list a patient for transplantation, that patient will remain on dialysis at that center forever!
Our Excellent Statistics Regarding Mortality
Perhaps more important, a center’s statistics on mortality should be of most concern. As calculated and reported by the Federal Government, Chinatown Dialysis Center’s Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) for the years 2018-2020 revealed that we had 34% fewer deaths than expected for our facility. We believe that these excellent results are related to the fact that, as a doctor owned and operated dialysis center, we employ nephrologists who monitor our patients during almost all their dialysis treatments, unlike almost every other dialysis center in New York.
It’s worth the trip!
Prioritize Quality over Convenience
The majority of patients are eligible to have transportation provided for them.
This is especially important for our patients who come to us from outside Manhattan. Please contact one of our social workers to determine whether you are eligible for transportation to Chinatown Dialysis Center
