Our Doctors See Every Patient
We are one of the few dialysis centers in New York which has nephrologists on-site throughout the day. Our nephrologists see every patient on dialysis during almost every treatment. Our kidney specialists are board certified with up to 30 years of dialysis experience.
They see the patients, discuss any symptoms or issues, and review dialysis data. This way, adjustments can be made constantly to the patient’s dialysis treatment and medications, ensuring that the prescribed treatment is optimal for each patient.
It makes sense that being seen by experienced doctors more often can prevent problems from arising, and lead to better care and healthier patients. Most dialysis centers can not offer this meticulous medical care for their patients.
Our nephrologists also see patients in consultation before they actually need dialysis. Through meticulous prescriptions of medications and diet, they have been able to postpone the need to start dialysis for prolonged periods in many patients.
Our History
Back in 1971, with 3 dialysis stations, we were one of the first in New York to offer dialysis to patients whose kidneys had failed. Since then we have grown exponentially, providing dialysis to hundreds of patients who come to us from across all 5 boroughs as well as from out-of-state.
But despite our growth, we remain committed to our original mission of offering the best medical care for patients with kidney disease. Our dialysis centers remain wholly owned and operated by doctors, not by large dialysis corporations, and we have a personal interest in each patient who enters our doors.
In 2001, Chinatown Dialysis Center was born. Chinatown Dialysis Center, like our other dialysis centers, serves the entire population of New York City and beyond. In addition to serving the general population, we have made special provisions to serve the large Asian population who often feel excluded from involvement in their chronic dialysis care because of the language barrier. Some of them might feel “lost” among patients and staff of other dialysis centers. On the other hand, patients feel comfortable when they are able to communicate in their native language.
Consequently, we have made sure that we have staff, including doctors, nurses, technicians, social workers, dieticians, and office workers who can speak the dialects of many in the Asian community including Mandarin, Cantonese, Fukienese, Fuzhounese, Taishanese and other dialects. The results have been impressive and gratifying. We have numerous patients of Asian descent who, like all of our patients are able to receive top-notch medical and dialysis care based on their individual needs. They are able to communicate and discuss their care and their needs with their providers to the same extent as all our English speaking patients. Chinatown Dialysis Center is keeping Chinese patients, and all our dialysis patients healthy, happy, and comfortable.
Better dialysis will allow a patient to continue to work despite being on dialysis. Our patients often live longer and healthier lives than most other facilities – some have remained healthy on dialysis for 20-30 years! We treat elderly patients with extra care and compassion, and it is not unusual for patients in their 90’s to remain healthy for years due to the excellent care they receive at Chinatown Dialysis Center. The message to remember is that better dialysis will provide you with longer life and a better quality of life.
At the same time, we start the process of listing each eligible patient for a kidney transplant as soon as possible after they start dialysis. We boast one of the highest transplantation rates in New York State.
Transplantation remains the best option for patients with kidney failure who are eligible for transplantation. A transplanted patient becomes free from the need of dialysis and can live a long and healthy life.
